“Don Diego” Captured

Just days after The Washington Post ran a story accusing the Colombian military of being infiltrated by the Norte del Valle drug cartel, surprise!….the Colombian military captures “Don Diego”, the head of the Norte del Valle cartel.

Traffickers Infiltrate Colombian Military

A Washington Post article discusses high level infilatration of the Colombian military by the Norte del Valle drug cartel and guerrilla groups. It describes the case of Rear Adm. Gabriel Arango, who has been accused of collaboration with drug smugglers:

The case of Arango, a promising commander in the Caribbean port of Cartagena, has captured the most attention here. When a fishing boat used to smuggle cocaine was intercepted in January 2006 by the Colombian coast guard, in a region Arango oversaw, investigators found navigational charts on board that showed not only the positioning of U.S. vessels but also that of warships from Britain, the Netherlands and Colombia.

The admiral vehemently denies the charges, claiming he is being set up. The article also cited last year’s murder of 10 counter-narcotics policemen by an army unit under the command of Col. Bayron Carvajal, who is thought to have been under the payroll of the Norte del Valle cartel.
