Some recent headlines….
November 20, 2007Headlines which could have far-reaching consequences for the region.
Colombia’s Uribe Seen as Solidifying Power : Apparently Uribe’s allies in the Colombian congress would like to modify the constitution to once again, permit him to run for re-election, this time for a third term. Since the Uribistas control congress and the Colombian constitutional court, this is not out of the realm of possibility.
Chávez’s Vision Shares Wealth and Centers Power: not to be outdone, Chavez is seeking changes to the Venezuelan constitution which would allow him to run for re-election indefinitely. The December 2 referendum is likely to be approved.
US lawmakers alarmed by Chavez’s plan for nuclear energy program in Venezuela: A Venezuelan-Iranian alliance to develop nuclear power in Venezuela could provide all the fodder needed for a Bush (or Clinton) military intervention in Venezuela.
So we are seeing a subversion of democracy and perhaps more alarmingly, increasing instability in the region which could potentially lead to yet another war, this one in our own back yard….all on George W. Bush’s watch.
